DHT And Male Pattern Hair Loss-Everything You Need To Know

Men who are losing their hair want answers!

By and largehormones are at fault. And a hormone, Dihydrotestosterone ("DHT"), is to blame.

If you have hair follicles that are sensitive to this hormone, the outcome is a condition called androgenetic alopecia, otherwise commonly known as male pattern hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia impacts more than 50 million men in the United States, making it the most widely recognized cause for hair loss in men by a wide margin. To understand how does DHT contributes to male pattern hair loss, it is important to understand the hair growth cycle.

The Hair Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle involves the following four phases:

Anagen (Growing) Phase

The anagen phase is the initial stage. Hair follicles exist deep down in the scalp and develop connections with blood vessels, connective tissues and nerves. Hairs stay in this phase for 3 to 5 years (1). The longer this phase lasts, the longer, thicker and stronger the hair growing from the follicles will develop. Ordinarily, around 80% to 85% of the hairs on the head are in this stage.

Catagen (Transitional) Phase

The catagen phase allows the hair follicles to renew.  During this stage, the hair detaches itself from all the connections in the scalp, such as the blood vessels nourishing it and the cells adding to its length. This phase usually lasts only two to three weeks. (2)

Telogen (Resting) Phase

This phase is characterized by a dead and keratinized hair. In the resting phase, hair follicles are dormant for 1 to 4 months as they prepare to naturally fall out. Ordinarily, somewhere in the range of 12% and 20% of hairs are in this stage.

Exogen (shedding) phase

Exogen is the last and often the least-described phase in hair growth. Hair in the exogen stage is effectively shed from the scalp. During this stage, it is totally normal to shed approximately 50 and 150 hairs each and every day.

What Is DHT?

Male pattern hair loss is due to a combination of genetic factors and the harmful impact of a hormone, DHT (3). DHT is a sex hormone responsible during puberty for development of masculine characteristicssuch as body hair, the deepening of your voice etc.

DHT is derived from testosterone. Both DHT and testosterone are androgens. Men typically have more testosterone present in their bodies than women but DHT also contributes to female pattern hair loss. In men, DHT is produced in the testes and prostate by a reaction between testosterone and an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR) (4). Up to 10% of testosterone is typically converted over into DHT.

DHT is much more potent than testosterone. At the receptor site, DHT competes with testosterone and binds there for a longertime than the original hormone thus initiating a receptor response.

How Does DHT Effect Hair Growth…?

DHT is not hazardous for all hair growth. In fact, it is considered to be essential for certain types of hair growth, like armpit hair, pubic hair and beard hair. However, for unknown reasons, it is tragic for scalp hair growth.

DHT binds to androgen receptors of hair follicles and triggers the receptors to begin miniaturizing. Higher levels of DHT can contract your hair follicles just as abbreviate this cycle, making hair grow thinner, weaker and more fragile.  This process is called “miniaturization.”

DHT can likewise slow down the time it takes for your follicles to develop new hairs, once old hairs drop out by shortening the growing phase and lengthening the resting phase.

Eventually, if DHT is not blocked from damaging the hair follicles, the follicles shut down and no longer produce hair.

Genetic Makeup And Hair loss

Your proclivity to losing hair is hereditary, meaning that it's passed down in your family.

According to the Director of the Rawnsley Hair and Restoration Clinic, Dr. Jeffry Rawnsley, some people may be more susceptible to effects of DHT as compared to others.

Research has determined that this is due to difference in their genetic makeup and androgen receptors that bind testosterone and DHT producing hormonal responses throughout the body including hair follicles also.

For instance, if your father suffered from male pattern hair lossyou will almost certainly experience comparable pattern of hair loss as you age.

In 1998, researchers discovered that hair follicles and skin from a balding scalp contain more significant levels of androgen receptors than those from a non-balding scalp. A few research studies also suggest that some people are genetically more susceptible to even normal levels of flowing androgens, especially DHT.

Variations in AR genes can also make you more responsive to androgen hormones in scalp follicles increasing your chances of having androgenic alopecia. This mix of hormonal and hereditary variables could clarify why a few people are almost certain than others to lose their hair.

Androgenic alopecia is also different in males and females. Men typically loss hair from crown, temples and along the hair line. In women, on the other hand, there is an overall thinning, more of a patchy hair loss specially near the temples.

The size and state of your head may likewise add to how rapidly DHT recoils your follicles.

Does Blocking DHT Regrow Hair…?

DHT is clearly an enemy to your hair. Therefore, it must be blocked or it will block your hair growth. DHT is the most common cause of hair loss in men and blocking DHT is the most effective way to prevent and reverse it.  Blocking DHT from attacking the hair follicles will prevent them from shrinking and getting thinner and promote the growth of new hair, thus increasing the volume, thickness and strength of your hair.

In a study reported in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, around 66% of the study participants utilizing DHT-blockers encountered meaningful hair regrowth. Significantly, a greater percentage of them retained their unique hair follicles.

Various scientific studies confirm the correlation between DHT and androgenic alopecia. It is therefore critical that DHT be blocked from attacking hair follicles-otherwise, the process of male pattern hair loss will continue to progress and get worse.

And to Finish….

If you are having hair loss or androgenic alopecia, don’t wait to treat it. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to stop and reverse it.  Time is truly crucial to the success of any hair loss treatment.
